The breathtaking view of the State House (1902) owes to
the fact that Providence was the wealthiest city in America
when it was built. The Dome is said to be the fourth largest
unsupported marble dome in the world putting it in the company of St. Peter’s in Rome the Taj Mahal and the US Capitol. The Independent Man is the statue on top of the dome. With spear in hand he is the official guardian of the state and the unofficial symbol of the Independence Trail. He has been a lonely bachelor for over a century so if you come from a state with an eligible statue let us know.
